What is an ECG?
An electrocardiogram records the electrical signals in your heart. It’s a common test used to detect heart problems and monitor the heart’s status. Electrocardiograms — also called ECGs or EKGs — are simple to setup and often take place in GP surgeries or clinics.
How is an ECG performed?
The test involves attaching up to 12 small, sticky sensors called electrodes to your arms, legs and chest. These are connected by wires to an ECG recording machine and measure electrical activity.
You’ll have no risk of getting an electrical shock during an ECG test because the electrodes placed on your body don’t emit electricity. They only record the electrical activity of your heart. This data is recorded as waves on a graph, with different patterns corresponding to each electrical phase of your heartbeat.
There is no special preparation required before the test and you may eat and drink as normal. The test usually lasts just a few minutes.
What does an ECG test for?
ECG tests can be ordered if your doctor expects any of the following:
Do I need an ECG?
If you are suffering from heart palpitations, rapid pulse, chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue or a decline in the ability to exercise then an ECG or EKG could reveal the answer to why you are suffering these symptoms. If you are suffering any of the above symptoms then be sure to contact your doctor immediately or call 999 in an emergency.

VisitHealth can carry out same-day ECG testing and deliver results directly to your doctor, giving you peace of mind over the health of your heart. Because this test is a simple procedure, VisitHealth can carry out the test in the comfort of your home or office.
